Mastery comes from being brave enough to allow your work to be weak, unfocused, muddy, and underdeveloped. You can’t reach mastery without going through so-so, not-so-great, and fair-to-middling. If you can’t stand your fledgling efforts, you’ll never make it to your highest expression. Being willing to be less-than-perfect is the greatest gift you can give to your artist self!

Goal Check-In:

• I met my January goal of completing and submitting my final draft of the middle grade novel. When the World Turned Upside Down is coming to a bookstore near you in November. In the meantime it is available for pre-sale online!
• I mostly met my goal of writing the first draft of Chapters 13–27 of the YA novel. Missed the mark by two chapters. Which is fine because, as I wrote in my reflection blogs here and here, I built in a two-week buffer before my delivery deadline. That buffer is now shorter by two days!
