One quality of humans is we’re almost always dreaming of the future—a time and place when we can do what we want, be who we want. I went to lunch today and saw an author there having lunch. I had a fantasy about what the lunch was about—I decided it was an editor talking to her about her next book. And then off I went, into the fantasy of my future as an author.

There was a lovely lifestyle I built when I was living in Bahia, Brasil in my 20s. Get up and write until lunch. Have lunch with friends. Go home and paint until dinner. Have dinner with friends and/or boyfriend, then hang out with my boyfriend after dinner then start all over again. It was the perfect balance of solitude and community, productivity and relaxation. I think I’ve always fantasized about getting back to that.

Writing first thing in the morning is perfect because my brain is fresh. But it’s hard because I have to cut off the flow when it’s time to do my day job. Doing art in the afternoon is perfect, because it’s more intuitive than logical, I don’t need to be as sharp as I need to be for the writing in the morning—I can surrender to my instinct. And a sprinkling of friends all day long—perfect!
